The activities of the Dutch Language House are based on three Cornerstones:

CORNERSTONE 1 - Screening and orientation

The first Cornerstone in the Dutch Language House offers those eager to learn Dutch full details about language courses in Brussels. Staff are on hand to help potential students seek the most suitable option from among a broad range of services. Towards this end, the Dutch Language House works in partnership with language institutes, vocational training centres and welcome offices. The House and these partners reach agreements on balancing the supply with the demand as much as possible in the case of Dutch language courses. Where appropriate, the House turns to the public authorities to help deal with shortages or overlaps.

CORNERSTONE 2 - Quality

This Cornerstone makes a contribution to the quality of the Dutch language courses on offer in the capital. Researchers also go there to investigate ways of helping non-first-language speakers to speak better Dutch and within a shorter space of time. The staff in this Cornerstone advise teachers and organisations and develop training programmes for specific target groups. For example, ambulance officers working for hospitals in Brussels require to speak a different type of Dutch from bricklayers employed on building sites in Brussels.

CORNERSTONE 3 - Promotion

Those who can understand and use Dutch are in a stronger position in Brussels. The Dutch Language House's promotion Cornerstone seeks to help the inhabitants of Brussels realise the truth of this assertion, via a carefully-thought-out, consistent policy. This can take the form of large-scale campaigns or small-scale initiatives for specific target groups. Brussels citizens who themselves have ideas for promoting the use and learning of Dutch in their city or environment can count on this Cornerstone for informative and logistical support.
