 Approach

Cornerstone 3 is presently operating according to 3 major themes.

First of all, Cornerstone 3 seeks to gather as much information as possible about the status of the Dutch language in Brussels. Those anxious to promote a language have to realise the language's status, the current evolution, why people are more or less inclined to learn or use this language.

In view of all these factors a "monitoring instrument" will be developed to help make a regular assessment of the extent to which Dutch is used (or is not used) in Brussels and how. We are calling on the services of various Brussels research institutes for deploying and creating this instrument.

The research findings form the basis for a series of targeted actions, acting as the second theme in Cornerstone 3 activities. These targeted actions are ad hoc initiatives focused on a specific target group or a specific section of the Brussels population. Together with this group or representative organisations within the sector chosen, a scheme is worked out with a view to ensuring Dutch has a higher profile. At the same time, the Dutch Language House (with the support of the other two Cornerstones in the strategy) is developing a service to take some of the pain out of learning Dutch for the various stakeholders and make it easier to learn the language more quickly and more efficiently. As well as creating a win-win situation, the approach may have implications for other spheres, sectors, other parts of the city Theme 3 in Cornerstone 3's strategy is achieved in close cooperation with Cornerstone 2. The entire Dutch Language House is eager to offer support to organisations and institutions that want to take initiatives themselves so as to enhance the status of Dutch within their own strategy.
