The idea with Cornerstone 3 is to convince French speakers and non-first-language speakers of Dutch in Brussels how useful it is to learn Dutch. Our initiatives seek to ensure Dutch is used more (and more noticeably) as one of the languages of communication in the capital.

Brussels is a multilingual city. In addition, Brussels is officially a bilingual city. Dutch speakers and French speakers should be able to use their own language in a maximum of locations and circumstances in Brussels. Nonetheless, they should continue to discover and meet each other (and the many non-first-language speakers). This will be possible only when a sufficient number of Brussels inhabitants and those working and visiting the city have an adequate knowledge of the two official languages, so that they can use them and dare to use them in situations of relevance for their circumstances.

In recent years, more and more French-speaking people and non-first-language speakers of Dutch living in Brussels have been learning Dutch. However, familiarity with and the use of Dutch in Brussels is still comparatively limited at present. The Dutch Language House is anxious to change this situation. Cornerstone 1 makes its contribution by steering students to the most suitable courses, Cornerstone 2 by constantly seeking to improve the standard of the courses. Cornerstone 3 motivates and stimulates, whilst removing thresholds or resistance that may exist. We start with the conviction that our initiatives are in the interests of every one who lives in, works in or visits Brussels. Those who speak Dutch (as well) are in a stronger position.

Here is where you can find further details about the philosophy that the Dutch Language House of Brussels has adopted as a basis for promoting the Dutch language.
