Immersion in Dutch for young people
The House of Dutch organises during the Autumn holidays 2009 (October 31 – November 7, 2009) another immersion in Dutch for young people. A genuine immersion in Dutch, adapted to the environment that young people live in with an emphasis on speaking.
Learning Dutch at school is one thing, using Dutch effectively is another. Even more so in Brussels. It's easy to get by in Brussels with French and you hardly hear a word of Dutch on the street. Nevertheless, a good knowledge of Dutch is a must on the job market.
With the initiative, 'Dive into Dutch', the House of Dutch is looking to forge a link between Brussels youth and the Dutch language and in so doing, offering them the chance to experience the language from the inside out.
Twice a year, twenty youngsters from Brussels spend a week in Antwerp, volunteering during the day in a local social organisation, such as a youth organisation, a home for the elderly or a home for people with a handicap.
During the evenings and in the weekend, the young people are treated to a series of recreational, linguistically stimulating activities, ranging from making a documentary in the city, role playing and group discussions to hip-hop sessions or theatre workshops.
No bookish classes, no complicated grammar or exceptions to the spelling rules but fun opportunities for expressing yourself in Dutch and discovering the language live and in practice.
After the week in Antwerpen, we find out together with the youngsters which way is the most appropriate to continue improving their Dutch.
Who? Young people (18-25 years) with a basic knowledge of Dutch and motivated to work in a social organisation.
Where? During the day the young people lend a helping hand at an Antwerp organisation. In the evening, participants come together in a youth hostel for a fun-filled programme.
When?
Saturday October 31 till saturday November 7, 2009
